All in all I have really wonderful memories of Christmas. I grew up in a very average home, not at all dysfunctional like so many people like to claim these days.
So why is The Ref my favorite Christmas movie?
Probably because I see so many people I know getting themselves all twisted in a bunch with stress over the holiday season and not realizing that they are doing it to themselves. That, and the genius that is the writing of Weiss and LaGravenese, and the neat perfect performance by the entire cast. I also like that it was a Christmas movie that didn't take the easy road of releasing around Christmas... it released in February when everyone who saw it could look back in the previous holiday and laugh at the reflections they saw of themselves or their family.
Below is a clip of my favorite scene. I don't know how long it will remain available on YouTube. The first 1/2 of the clip is priceless.
It begins with Caroline (Judy Davis) finishing a rant about why she wants to leave Lloyd and work as a "truck stop waitress."
FWIW, my second favorite Christmas movie of all time is Bad Santa. |
